    Equipment needed for cross stitch

Cross stitching, the art of creating a design or painting with x-shaped threads across a piece of fabric, requires very little equipment which is one reason why newly initiated sewers often practice their stitches on a cross stitch sampler.

In general, cross stitching requires that you use fabric, thread, and needles.  Of course, there are several variations from this basic formula which give each different cross stitch their own unique appearance.

Or the most part, a thin white cloth called Aida is used to sew a cross stitch design on although sometimes other fabrics with evenweaves are used as well.  The main requirement for fabric that is used to cross stitch is even blocks that measure 2.5cm in all directions.

This is the most basic requirement, although there are higher and lower thread counts that increase or decrease the amount of stitches that it takes to complete the work.  Also, higher thread counts often mean that the fabric is finer thus the higher thread counts are usually best for those who have experience with embroidery.

Beginners usually use aida because the thread count is basic and each block is evenly placed.  It can come in many colours although white is the most common colour.

Evenweaves such as cotton, modal, and linen are popular for those with experience and also come in many colours.  To correct the problems with the threading in these fabrics oftentimes the cross stitch is completed over two blocks of the weave instead of just one.

Any type of thread can be used for cross stitching but cotton is the most popular choice.  Stranded cotton known as floss in particular is the most popular although sometimes metallic and other blended filament threads are used to create accents or a special effect on the fabric.

Tweeding is also used to create a special effect on the canvas which is the practice of using two different colours of floss at one time in the needle to create a layered look.

Although many cross stitch kits may offer you special tools to aid your cross stitch you truly only need a needle, a pair of scissors, and frames.

The best type of needles for cross stitch are blunt tapestry needles that are size 24 or 26.  The size may differ however depending on the type of fabric you are using and what you prefer personally.

Scissors should be sharp and sewing shears instead of simple household scissors. They aren’t exactly freebies – being a little more expensive than normal scissors but if you are serious about your work then it is worth investing in a pair as you will have an easier time working with them. This is because they cut much cleaner and will leave your canvas looking much sharper than a pair of household scissors

Frames are not required to complete a cross stitch, but oftentimes they make it easier to complete your design since they stretch out the design and help flatten out each stitch.
